15,000 RURAL AND TRIBAL 'SAKHIS' TO GET MEDICAL ATTENTION

Hindustan Zinc organizes ‘Sakhi’ Mega Health Check-up Camp in rural Rajasthan. 15000 rural & tribal women will be treated for Diabetes and Hypertension under ‘Sakhi’ Campaign


15,000 rural and tribal women will receive medical attention under Hindustan Zinc’s ‘Sakhi’ campaign, which has been launched by the company to provide socio-economic empowerment to rural and tribal women of Rajasthan. The ‘Sakhi Mega Health Check-up Camp’ has begun today and will cover 15,000 rural and tribal women in Udaipur, Rajsamand, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Ajmer.

This 1 month camp will focus on diabetes and hypertension which is being commonly found in rural & tribal women. The camps will run in 3 phases in collaboration with an NGO partner, Dirgahayu Foundation. In first phase of 3 days, blood sugar and blood pressure will be checked through finger stick method and electronic blood pressure monitor respectively at each location. In second phase, the women who are diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension will undergo lab tests like HbA1c, CBC, Lipid Profile to name a few, followed by proper consultancy with health education and proper diet chart by team of doctors under the guidance of Dr. Garima Chaturvedi. In third phase, a further follow-up and consultation will be given to these rural women.

Hindustan Zinc will be organizing over 36 camps in a given period of time covering 18 clusters of villages thus taping rural and tribal women of over 180 villages.

In India with 65 million people are suffering from diabetes. Our country is also known as ‘diabetes capital of the world’ and this number is expected to grow to 100 million by year 2030. Women are more susceptible to diabetes and it leads to complications like heart diseases, strokes, blindness and kidney failures. It has become imperative to address the problem, particularly in rural & tribal women who are usually unaware of the threats.

Under the ‘Sakhi’ Mega Health Check-up Camp, apart from 6000 ‘Sakhi’ rural women of 475 ‘Sakhi’ self-help-groups of Hindustan Zinc, 9000 rural & tribal women of other self-help-groups will also be getting benefitted from this camp, informed Mr. Pavan Kaushik – Head Corporate Communication, HZL.

India is a country where most of the population resides in villages. Thus, it becomes imperative to develop these villages and bring infrastructural changes while increasing the flow of information to turn them into model villages. Awareness is the key to success. It is said, 'if you want India to grow, empower rural woman, as when you empower a rural woman, you in-turn empower the entire family, a village and ultimately a country'.

Assessing the needs of rural women in Rajasthan and to give impetus to on-going programmes on women empowerment and rural sanitation, Hindustan Zinc launched two exclusive campaigns this financial year, the campaign, ' Sakhi" which is empowering more than 6,000 rural and tribal women and turning them into rural women entrepreneurs and the campaign, Maryadaa where Hindustan Zinc is constructing30,000 toilets in the rural Rajasthan and spreading awareness about good sanitation and health and hygiene habits.

Campaign "Sakhi" for women empowerment and entrepreneurship:

Hindustan Zinc has been engaged in empowerment of rural women through formation of self-help-groups since 2005-06. Each group has about 12-15 rural and tribal women and these women are being developed as rural women entrepreneurs who are managing their own micro -enterprises. The self-help-group training starts with teaching them thrift savings, linking them with banks and then segregating them as per their interests for extensive vocational training in farm and non-farm based sector. Today, Hindustan Zinc has more than 450 Sakhi-self-help-groups across five districts of Rajasthan: Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Rajsamand, Bhilwara and Ajmer.

Interaction with these women has always been a challenge as these women are primarily from remote villages and are not quite open for dialogue or conversation. Family pressure and their household work further adds up to this pressure. This makes the task of community connect team of Hindustan Zinc more difficult. Convincing these women and then their families takes days of regular interaction and motivation. Finally, when these women see their siblings come out of their homes and improve their social and economic condition, they agree.

These rural women of self-help groups popularly known as 'Sakhi', once trained in vocational traits, start getting orders from the different markets, towns as well as big cities. A coordinator has been kept by the company for managing a cluster of Sakhi self-help-groups who helps in getting orders for these Sakhi self-help-groups and coordinates the production.

Not every woman wants to get trained in garments, accessories, home-furnishing or other products; some are inclined to continue with their ancestral trait like agriculture and livestock development. For these women, special projects and training sessions are developed and organised like cash crop cultivation, water harvesting, green-house development, seeds selection, etc. For women connected with livestock, training is given on breeding and artificial insemination, managing livestock, immunisation etc.

The Sakhi campaign's objective is to make these women as much self-sustainable and empower them socially and economically so that support their families and improve their overall lives.

Campaign "Maryadaa” for toilets construction and sanitation awareness:

India is counted amongst the nations who are suffering from a large population involved in open defecation. According to the reports by UNICEF, only 48 per cent of Indian rural population has good toilets and sanitation facilities. More than 50 per cent of Indian population defecates in open. Only 21 per cent of India's rural population uses improved sanitation facilities out of 31 per cent of national figures.

In countries like Bangladesh and Brazil, only 7 per cent of their population defecates in open. In China, only 4 per cent of the population defecates in open.

In India, Rajasthan in particular is a state where about 60 per cent population defecates in open. A report by World Health Organisation also mentions that over half a billion (more than 50 crore) people in India still continue to defecate in gutters, behind bushes or in open water bodies with no dignity or privacy. Lack of awareness and infrastructure isa leading reason for people to defecate in open. No doubt, the figures are quite high in rural India but even the large cities and metros are not behind.

To create awareness and construct tenets in rural Rajasthan, Hindustan Zinc launched its campaign Maryadaa. On the initiative by Rajasthan government, Hindustan Zinc signed an MoU to construct 30,000 toilets which would have two leach pits below to facilitate disposal of waste. As per the project, one leach pit would be opened at a time which is estimated to be full in about five years.

Once the first leach pit is full, the second leach pit would be opened.

By the time the second leach pit is full, the waste in the first leach pit would have been converted into manure, to be used in better yield of crops, And once empty, it would be good to use for the waste. These toilets would also minimise the risk of contamination of drinking water sources thus reducing the health related problems in rural India.

Under the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, under which these toilets are being constructed, the cost of each toilet comes to about Rs. 8,500. About ?4,600 is being contributed by the state government, Rs. 3,000 by Hindustan Zinc and Rs.900 by the beneficiary, Hindustan Zinc has already constructed more than 9,000 toilets in Bhilwara, Udaipur and Chittorgarh by now.

Lack of toilet facilities in the house is a grave concern particularly for the rural females and the problem becomes even worse during late hours or during pregnancy Toilet in each house provides not just comfort but is also a matter of dignity and brings sense of security.

Hindustan Zinc's Maryadaa campaign is also spreading awareness about good sanitation habits and health and hygiene in the rural masses. The objective of Maryadaa is to eliminate open defecation practices in the villages and make Rajasthan an open defecation free state'.

Hindustan Zinc's approach is to socially and economically empower rural women and construction of house hold toilets in rural houses is a step to directly impact the lives of rural women.

Hindustan Zinc in association with Dainik Bhaskar had organized the "SAKHI" Workshop on 24th July, 2014 in Udaipur for rural & tribal "SAKHI" SHG women residing in the region. More than 130 rural & tribal women participated in the workshop where they were given insight on new traits - Jute pot holders & bangle stand, Katran trays, Stylish Sling bags, key chains, patch work, designer wears, to name a few.

Hindustan Zinc campaign “SAKHI” developing Rural Women as Entrepreneurs

It is said, when you empower a rural and tribal women, you in-turn make a complete family socially and economically independent, thereby energizing the whole village and ultimately contributing towards the progress of a nation.

The rural women in India have been proving their mettle and strength in every sphere of life; be it house-hold work, agriculture, traditional crafts or liberal arts, rural women of India have always been in forefront and have even dominated the global fashion industry with their creativity and understanding of traditional art & craft skills. These rural and tribal women are now more confident and determined to manage their finances through banks while educating their children and supporting families.

Hindustan Zinc, a Sesa-Sterlite Limited company in zinc, lead, silver and wind-energy business, realized the potential of these women and decided to engage with them in different interest areas that are also feasible for them.

The company started a campaign to bring social and economic empowerment amongst these rural and tribal women, particularly those who were residing near its business locations in Rajasthan. The initiative aimed at bringing about 10-15 women of similar creative minds, behaviour and temperament under a single platform of ‘Self-Help-Group’. Once part of the group these women are groomed through intensive vocational training that includes tailoring, stitching, tie and dye, meenakari, terracotta, embroidery, artificial jewellery making, beautician,  home-furnishing etc. Adult education camps are also organized to make these women literate.

Eventually, these rural and tribal women have come up as rural women entrepreneur. 

Hindustan Zinc recently launched a national campaign “SAKHI” that recognizes the success of these rural and tribal women and has brought together these more than 6,000 rural and tribal women of Rajasthan and weaved them into about 475 “SAKHI” self-help-groups to make them as Rural Women Entrepreneurs.

The rural system has its own customs and traditions but the biggest has been the social system. It was never easy to convince these women towards joining the “SAKHI” self-help-groups and spare about 4-5 hours almost daily for learning different vocational traits. The support of family members was imperative and to convince the family was a challenging task. Hindustan Zinc’s CSR representatives spent hours together to convince the families and make them understand the socio-economic empowerment “SAKHI” initiative will eventually bring.

“SAKHI” campaign has given Hindustan Zinc a unique opportunity and edge to further scale-up and strengthen self-help-groups and encourage millions of other rural and tribal women to come forward towards their socio-economic empowerment.

The campaign has been launched through a blog www.vedantasakhi.blogspot.in, which uploads the success stories of these women and other important information/extracts of reports. The other platform, Facebook www.facebook.com/vedantasakhi is a knowledge sharing platform and promotes the cause by organizing discussions and deliberations. 


"SAKHI" has brought these women under a single umbrella as a collective force. Now they have started sharing their experience, knowledge, vocational traits, which has also considerably improved their communication skills.  Most of these women have bank accounts and they manage them independently. The “SAKHI” self-help-groups also have a market coordinator who on their behalf negotiates the prices of their products in the market and generates orders.

The objective of “SAKHI” is also to impart trainings to these women in other professional streams, strengthen vendors base and suppliers base, bringing market competitiveness, ensure finishing & quality output, and eventually enhance their social & economic status by improving monthly returns.

Recently, “SAKHI” organized its first interactive workshop that saw participation by over 350 rural and tribal women entrepreneurs from Rajsamand, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara, Ajmer and Udaipur districts’ self-help-groups.

Prof. Anuja Sisodia from Indian Institute of Crafts and Design, Jaipur took the workshop that gave these women an insight on designing, colour combination, finishing & quality checks, customer analysis, and market trends.  The workshop also had interactive sessions on garments and home-furnishing market, development of handicraft industry, production as per current fashion trends and pricing of the products. These rural women also expressed their concerns about the availability of raw material, need for upgraded training programs and new markets for selling the products. Hindustan Zinc has taken the responsibility to strengthen the market linkages on behalf of these women.

Each “SAKHI” (as these women entrepreneurs are addressed) has a success story to narrate and every success story gives birth to hundreds of more success stories. “SAKHI” is a voice of these rural and tribal women and the campaign is destined to improve their social and economic life.

The company has started the construction of these toilets in Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Udaipur districts of Rajasthan and so far the construction of 8,000 toilets has been completed. The company is constructing 2 ‘Leach Pits’ below each toilet to facilitate disposal of waste.

Only one ‘Leach Pit’ will be used at a time. Each ‘Leach Pit’ is estimated to be full in about 5 year. As the first ‘Leach Pit’ is full the second ‘Leach Pit’ will be opened.  Within 5 years the waste in the first ‘Leach Pit’ will be converted into manure to be utilized by the farmer for agriculture purpose.

These newly constructed toilets will also minimize the risk of contamination of drinking water sources thus reducing the health related problems in rural India. Under the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, cost of construction of each toilet is Rs. 8,500/-, where Rs. 4600 per toilet is being paid by government, Rs. 3000 by Hindustan Zinc and Rs. 900 by the beneficiary.

The project is also expected to improve good hygiene practices and create awareness towards health & sanitation.

This project of constructing toilets has been undertaken by Hindustan Zinc with an objective to provide clean and hygienic house-hold toilets to the BPL families and discourage and eventually eliminate open defecation practices in the villages. Hindustan Zinc would be spending about Rs. 8.6 crore towards construction of these 30,000 toilets.

According to UNICEF report, today only 48% of rural Indian population has access to good toilet and sanitation facilities. When more than 50% of Indian population defecates in open it leads to improper disposal of the waste, sanitation issues and cause of many harmful diseases. With Rajasthan in particular, 60% of population defecates in open.
